Summary: This 12 hour (2-day) course is aimed at anybody who comes into contact with children including pre-school staff, nursery staff, play workers, children centre staff, teachers and Learning Support Assistants.

It meets Ofsted and EYFS requirements as well as being the Standard for achieving Millie’s Mark.

Who is the 2 day Paediatric First Aid (PFA) for?

As of 3rd April 2017, maintained schools, non-maintained schools, independent schools, all providers on the Early Years Register and all providers registered with an early years childminder agency must comply with the latest Statutory framework. This course meets these requirements.

2 Classroom days or 6 hours online plus 1 classroom day

We understand that it is difficult to free up time for staff training, as cover needs to be found, or it eats into a weekend for your staff. Because of this we can run this as 6 hours online (completed at the staff member’s own pace) followed by just one Classroom day. This is our Blended option. It can work out cheaper, especially once you consider the cost of temporary cover, or overtime. The Blended version costs just £600 for the Classroom part plus £30 per person for the online part.

Combine with 1-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA)

If you don’t have enough staff to fill a PFA course but do have staff that need the 1-day EPFA they can attend day 1 of the course and get EPFA Certified.in parallel for no extra cost. The only restriction is that the total number of learners (EPFA + PFA) cannot exceed 12.

Millies’s Mark

If you wish to obtain the Millie’s Mark for your Organisation, this is the qualification that all your staff will need.

All courses are delivered, evaluated and quality assured to the same standards where possible as First Aid at Work topics. The course content fully meets the UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2015 and subsequent updates.
Whilst we try and maintain a fixed cost for our courses, our prices may be subject to an additional fuel charge if your location is a distance away from our nearest trainer to you.
There is a £50 supplement per day if that day is a Sunday or Bank Holiday.

Syllabus

Day 1 / First 6 hours (also known as Emergency Paediatric First Aid and anyone attending just day 1 can receive a certificate in Emergency Paediatric First Aid.

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
    • Explain the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
    • Explain how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
    • Identify when to use personal protective equipment when providing first aid
    • Identify contents of a paediatric first aid kit
    • Identify the need to complete an accident report/incident record
    • Define an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment
  2. Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
    • Conduct a scene survey
    • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
    • Identify when to call for help
  3. Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
    • Place an infant and a child in the recovery position
    • Continually monitor an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position
    • Assist an infant and a child who is experiencing a seizure
  4. Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (including agonal breathing)
    • Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive child who is not breathing normally
    • Administer CPR using an infant and a child manikin
    • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator using an infant and a child mannikin
  5. Help a baby or child who is choking
    • Identify when choking is mild and severe
    • Administer first aid to an infant and a child who is choking
  6. Help a baby or child who is bleeding
    • Explain the types and severity of bleeding in infants and children
    • Control external bleeding
  7. Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolaemic shock)
  8. Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries
    • Bites (human and animal)
    • Stings (bees and wasps)
    • Small cuts
    • Grazes
    • Bumps and bruises
    • Small splinters
    • Nose bleeds

Day 2 / Second 6 hours

  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
  • Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
  • Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
  • Help a baby or child with an eye injury
  • Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Help a baby or child having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; an allergic reaction; meningitis; and/or febrile convulsions
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)
